Welcome to Alkohology. I wonder why they call it a cocktail. Yes, I'd like to know more about the Venus Vinifera. I'm very interested in the terroir. We talking about two carbon, six hydrogen and one oxygen atom. We talking about ethyl alcohol.
Rob:Today's episode the Reinheitsgebot. Hallo, liebe Zuhörer, es ist Rob, willkommen bei Matt und Freunden Trinkt das Universum. Hello, dear listeners, this is Rob, and welcome to Matt and Friends Drink the Universe. Today, on Alkohology, we will be talking about the Reinheitsgebot or, as many of you may know it in English, the German Beer Purity Law. What exactly is the Reinheitsgebot? Well, this law was enacted on April 23, 1516 in Bavaria by Duke Wilhelm IV and his brother, duke Ludwig X.
Rob:The purpose of this law was to regulate the ingredients in beer to ensure both its quality and affordability. In its original form, this dictated that only three ingredients could be used water, barley and hops. Yeast wasn't a part of the law because at the time, the brewers did not know it existed. They relied on natural fermentation from the wild yeast within the air. Why was this law so important? First and foremost, it protected the public. Back then, some brewers would use questionable or even dangerous ingredients in beers to try to enhance the flavor or cut their costs. There were stories of people using soot, stinging nettles or even hallucinogenic plants like henbane or belladonna, and these ingredients could make you seriously ill. By restricting the ingredients, the law helped make beer safer to drink ill. By restricting the ingredients, the law helped make beer safer to drink. It also made sure that the grains like wheat and rye, which were essential for making bread, weren't used in beer. This was critical for ensuring that there was enough grain available for food during times when crops were scarce.
Rob:What happens if you were to violate the Reinheitsgebot? Well, if a brewer used an unapproved ingredient, they could face serious consequences. The offending beer would be confiscated and the brewers could be fined. In some cases, they would be forced to destroy the entire batch of beer. So the brewers took the law very seriously. You might be wondering how does this all connect to Oktoberfest, the world's most famous beer festival? Well, only beers brewed within Munich that follow the Rhein-Heizkabot can be served at Oktoberfest. This means when you're raising a glass at Oktoberfest, you're drinking a beer made according to a centuries-old tradition. Now let's talk about some modern beers that still follow the Reinheitsgebot.
Rob:Even though it's no longer strictly enforced, many German breweries continue to honor this law as a sign of quality and tradition. Here's a few that you may recognize Weihand, steffner, paul Lanner, augustiner, hofbraum, munchen and Bitburger. And I'm surprised to not see Becks on this list Wund Becks, wund Becks. These breweries and their beers stand as a testament to the Reinhardt's lasting influence, even though the law was relaxed in the 20th century, in 1987, the European Court of Justice ruled that it restricted free trade within the EU, allowing foreign beers with other ingredients to enter the German market. Still many breweries voluntarily follow this law because of the symbol of quality. Fun fact, april 23rd, the anniversary of the Reinhardt's Kabots creation, is celebrated as German Beer Day. Many breweries host events and special releases to commemorate this historic day. So, whether you're sipping on a Paul Anner at Oktoberfest or grabbing a cold Bitburger, know that you're not just drinking a beer, you're enjoying a piece of history, a tradition that has defined German beer for over 500 years. So, as they say in Germany when they raise their glasses Prost.
